Detergents and Cleaners

In modern formulation chemistry, the shift toward biodegradable and multifunctional ingredients is a key priority. Acetates fit perfectly into this approach.

Buffering and formulation stability

Sodium acetate (both anhydrous and trihydrate) functions as a mild, precise buffer. It stabilizes the pH of liquid detergents, ensuring that enzymatic systems remain within their optimal stability range and preventing the hydrolysis of surfactants.

Tablet manufacturing and disintegration

Sodium acetate trihydrate is highly valued in automatic dishwashing and laundry tablets.

Due to its high water of crystallization content, it acts as a tableting aid when compressed together with other tablet ingredients, such as TAED bleach activators, percarbonates, hydroxycarboxylate and phosphate builders, and fillers such as sodium sulfate.

Upon contact with water, it dissolves rapidly and promotes fast tablet disintegration. This allows it to replace carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and other synthetic binders or disintegrants, while leaving no residues on dishes or fabrics.

Co-builder functionality

Although not a primary chelating builder like zeolites, phosphonates, or citrates, acetates help maintain ionic strength and prevent soil redeposition by stabilizing particulate dispersion in the wash liquor, thereby acting as co-builders.

Antimicrobial cleaning performance

Sodium diacetate delivers a high concentration of free, undissociated acetic acid upon dissolution.

This undissociated acid penetrates bacterial cell walls, disrupts intracellular pH, and acts as an effective, biodegradable antimicrobial agent in acidic toilet cleaners, hard-surface sanitizers, and industrial cleaning formulations.
